They are made to be split into two 300 watt circuits. So it's ideal to place it at a location in the middle of you lights. Basically to go each direction from the transformer. Now you need to find out what wattage bulbs are in each light.(different fixtures can have different watt bulbs.) Lets say you have 8 lights going one direction and 8 going the other way and each light has a 20 watt bulb. That adds up to 160 watts on each side.
So you are well below the 300 watt rating per side. By the way I wouldn't go anymore than 250 watts on a 300 watt circuit. Next you look on the bottom of the transformer and you will see the screws where you hook up the wire. You will need to strip the end of the wires about a half inch. Hook one set under the A & B for one side then do the same for the otherside. Plug in the transformer and set the timer to whatever tme of day and night you prefer.

I would take it back and get another and if it happens again than you may not installing it correctly or installing too close exposing to lots of moister and may short the unit out. I don't recommend trying to fix it still having warranty on them, get a replacement and start over.

Hi being these spend most of their life outdoors these tend to accumulate dust and debris inside the mechanism.
Also as moisture corrodes the internal parts they start to fail after a short while. Couple of solutions use an external timer (pull the set pins out of the onboard timer) or replace the unit. I recommend making sure that the timer is located somewhere where it is protected such as on or under a porch or deck, where its not getting wet all teh time. Also might be time to upgrade to a 300 or 600 watt unit? Home depot sells their Hampton bay brand transformers with a photocell for between $50 to $100 Jan 08, 2010. The Hampton Bay 300W transformer requires that at least a 20 watt load for it to function. If you only have one bulb, say a 10 or 15 watt to test it, it wont work - sounds crazy, I know.
If you have an installation brochure it's under 'Important Safety Feature'. The first sentence reads 'In order for this Transformer to operate, a minimum load of 20 watts MUST be installed before plugging the Transformer into the electrical outlet.
Hope that's it - by the way, these transformers can emit a high pitch when running - not sure why, but it's a common complaint. Jan 13, 2009. They are made to be split into two 300 watt circuits.

Landscape transformers reduce voltage from 120 volts to 12 to 22 volts, reducing the safety hazard of power cords outdoors. Approximately 15 feet of cable can run per transformer to various lighting systems outside. Troubleshooting the landscape transformer is necessary if the outdoor lighting is not working.Add up the individual wattage of each fixture that is attached to the landscape transformer. Determine the total output of the transformer by looking at the transformer power label, which is typically about 600 watts.
Do not exceed the total output of the landscape transformer from the individual fixtures. Add a second landscape transformer if necessary.Test the photocell during the day if you are not sure that the transformer is working correctly at night.
Plug the transformer into a 120-volt GFCI outlet. Set the black cover over the photocell ensuring no light reaches the photocell, and then set the transformer’s mode to “Auto.” Once the photocell is completely in the dark, the outdoor lights should illuminate. Removing the plastic cover turns off the lights. Replace the photocell if necessary by unplugging the transformer and removing the power pack.
Loosen the screws on the access hatch and then on each terminal allowing access to the photocell wire. Remove the wire retaining clip, and then slide open the clip hatch and remove the photocell wire. Slide the wire out through the square hole to remove the photocell.
